Steve’s Comments: This is the second cut away vase of this style. I throw the vase and then cut away a lot of clay to create three tree trunks that support the top of the vase, which will be the leaves at the tree tops. This is time consuming carving. The clay is still wet, somewhat weak and supporting the top until it hardens. Then the trunks are scored to look like tree trunks and when glazed I use stains and oxides for the glazing for the faux-bois (false wood) glazing. The rest of the vase is glazed with a green flowing drip combination applied with two glazes one on top of the other. Many people ask if it is a candle lantern. When I made this I did not have that intention, I just started carving away at the thrown vase. Often I just let my artistic expression flow as I am working on a piece, sometimes not knowing where it will take me!
